Happy Independence Day: Tunisia Celebrates Its Independence from France

Independence Day of Tunisia: March 20

Independence Day is a public holiday in Tunisia.
Tunisia celebrates the anniversary of their Independence from France yearly every 20th of March.
Tunisia is bordered by two African countries: Algeria (west) and Libya (southwest) and Mediterranean sea which surrounds the country on the northern and partly eastern part. It assumed the name of Kingdom of Tunisia after it gained independence from France in 1956 after more than seven decades (75 years) of having French protectorate status. It subsequently gained its republic status in June 25, 1957 with Habib Bourguiba as its first president.
Tunisia is a member of the Arab League (AL) and the African Union (AU) but keeps close ties with members of the European Union (EU). Tunisia is known to have comprehensive laws that protect the rights of all women and its continuous repression against Islamic fundamentalists in the region.

History of Independence Day of Tunisia

The occupation of Tunisia by foreign rule was jostled among the Vandals (5th century AD), the Byzantines (6th century) and the Arabs (8th Century). It came onto the hands of the Ottoman Empire in the early 18th century and eventually became a French protectorate in 1881.
In World War II, Tunisia became a battleground of the British and US forces along with their allies including the French against the Italians and Germans (Axis Powers). However, Tunisia’s French protectorate status continued even after the end of World War II.
The Tunisian War of Independence eventually ended the French’s 75 years rule on the country. The war occurred between 1952 and 1956 between the French military forces in the area and the Tunisian guerilla’s led by al-Habib Bourqeiba who became the country’s first president. Even after the separation, France still maintains close contact with Tunisia supporting it with humanitarian aids including Tunisia’s plans to harness nuclear energy.

Independence Day of Tunisia: Traditions, Customs and Activities

The government of Tunisia holds the celebration of Independence day with luncheons and speeches with topics relating to the bravery of the guerilla forces in calling for a free Tunisia during the Tunisian War of Independence. Local leaders may also lay wreath of flowers in cemeteries and memorial parks as tribute to those who perished in the wars resulting to the independence of the country.
The working class may take this day as a rest day since government and most private offices remain close as well during the holiday.

Happy National Day,

Tunisia
